What are some succesful but cheap walleye baits?
Our family has a house on Lake Manistique, MI. The lake is a very weedy and shallow lake with plenty of walleye but we dont no how to catch them. How can we adapt to the weeds and depth and what are some good baits to use?
Actually, it’s called "Manistique Lake". Sorry, but I used to manage this lake as an employee of the Fisheries Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources out of Escanaba. Contact the bait shop in Curtis, MI. They will be able to let you know how the "locals" get them. Your best bet is going to be crawler harnesses trolled slowly. Don’t be afraid to ask your neighbors too. They will be more than willing to share information. Lastly, contact Jim Waybrant at the Newberry DNR office. You will be able to get his number/email from the web. Tell him "The Hammer" sent you. He’s a great guy who knows more about Manistique Lake than Manistique Lake does! Good luck and have fun. I know you will be successful.

husky jerks are prefect for shallow waters, also x-rap work pretty good.

I have fished Manistique Lake(s) several times over the past 30 years and typically find walleye success just drifting / trolling with a crawler harness. Casting a red & white daredevle spoon has worked well also for both walley and northern pike.

By far, the lead head jig with a live minnow is my favorite Walleye bait. I use 1/4 ounce jigs. Visit my website, and click on the Walleye heading to see loads of Walleyes caught on jigs and Shad Raps (my other favorite lure).
With the jig, you dont feel a hit always, instead it just feels heavy. Set the hook.
Good luck.

The most inexpensive, overlooked Walleye lure is the jig-head rigged with a soft plastics. That soft plastic could be a 3" or bigger curly-tailed grub, a "sassy-shad" type bait or a hollow-bellied swimbait. Crankbaits work wonders too but jigs are more readily available and cheaper. Bass Pro Shops makes both jig-heads and any of the bodies to go on them. I have been very happy with Bass Pro Shops’ Spring Grubs, I would highly recommend them.
You could also always just dig some nightcrawlers and use or even net some minnows.
